Swayable
Analytics Dashboard



I had the opportunity to collaborate with Swayable, a Y Combinator-backed content analytics platform, during a pivotal phase of their product development. Their approach to impact analytics was truly unique, and I was brought in to help craft a visual language that could effectively communicate their scientific-grade data. This project was influential in establishing Swayable's core visual identity and overall product experience.


The Challenge

Swayable generates unique, scientific data predicting content influence on specific consumer opinions. When I met them, their clients, primarily content producers, faced a time-consuming process of requesting personalized data visualizations from the team. They needed direct, self-service access to explore this complex data across tailored demographics and content performance metrics. Key challenges included:

  • Complexity of Data
    Multi-dimensional data spanning content, time, audience segments, and analytical breakdowns needed simplification for user comprehension.

  • Need for Actionable Insights
    Clients required clear, visual representations to quickly identify effective content and understand its impact on specific target groups.

  • User Empowerment
    Content producers needed to independently explore data without relying on the Swayable research team for every query. And the product team needed to start scaling their tailored services to more clients.

  • Subtle Performance Differences
    High data resolution was crucial to visualize nuanced variations in content impact across different segments.


My Contributions

Working closely with the Swayable product team, my focus was on designing an intuitive and impactful analytics dashboard, including:

  • Dynamic Filtering System
    I designed an adaptable filtering system that dynamically presents relevant filters based on the selected data. This allows users to seamlessly switch between quantitative and qualitative views and create highly specific data segments (e.g., combining age ranges and geographic regions) without distracting from the results. 

  • Multi-Modal Filters
    For the filter selectors, I started with commonly-used filter patterns, and built in secondary levels of complexity for advanced users.  This approach allowed me to offer an accessible UI for entry-level content analysts, while also supporting powerful filtering capabilities for experts.

  • Gradient Charts for Nuanced Impact Analysis
    Recognizing the limitations of simple directional charts, I worked with the product team to design a set of gradient-based charts. These visualizations used a color spectrum to illustrate not just the direction of opinion change but also where on the opinion spectrum that change occurred (e.g., low to medium vs. medium to high favorability). This provided clients with a clearer snapshot of content impact.

  • Comprehensive Timeline Tooltips
    For longitudinal studies, I designed a unified tooltip within the timeline view. This provided a contextual snapshot of the data at a specific point, including crucial research parameters like confidence levels and sample size, offering a deeper layer of data interpretation.

  • Multi-View Mode Design
    To address the complexity of the multi-dimensional data, I contributed to the design of multiple view modes. Each mode was tailored to highlight specific aspects of the data (region, time, qualitative feedback, etc.) guiding users toward actionable insights within the complex dataset.


Impact and Outcomes

My work on the Swayable Analytics Dashboard contributed to:

  • Enhanced User Empowerment
    Content producers gained direct, self-service access to critical research data, reducing reliance on the Swayable team and accelerating the insight generation process.

  • Improved Data Understanding
    The introduction of insightful chart systems and an intuitive filtering system enabled clients to gain a deeper, more nuanced understanding of content performance across various audience segments.

  • Facilitated Actionable Insights
    Clear and visually rich data representations empowered clients to quickly identify effective content strategies and make informed decisions regarding content production and media buying.

  • Foundation for Product Growth
    The visual language and core interaction patterns established during this early stage, including the development of a design system, laid a strong foundation for Swayable's subsequent product development and user experience.


Conclusion

My collaboration with Swayable during the development of their analytics dashboard was focused on transforming complex scientific data into an accessible and empowering tool for content producers. By prioritizing user-centered design and introducing innovative visualization techniques, we helped bridge the gap between sophisticated analytics and actionable marketing strategy. The dashboard improvements contributed to Swayable's offering, enabling clients to gain deeper insights into their audience and optimize their content for maximum impact.
